GO GREEN!!

In today’s expanding society you have heard more and more from the politicians , news papers and activists about the importance of going green and being environmentally responsible for the amount of carbon we produce as well as rubbish we needlessly throw away.

The green revolution- or so its been doubted; is an important step to keeping mother earth healthy for future generations and more immediately, our future too!

Now most of us will agree that making a change in our life style can sometimes be a little difficult to adjust too, sometimes wanting to see the fruits of our labours sooner then later is the vary human nature of us. One way to see these ” fruits’ is to see the savings. In fact most of these life style adjustments will prove not only healthy for the environment, it will also conform to many future provincial laws, and most of all save you money in your living expenses.

As a homeowner, here are some simple things you can do around the house, to start the “green revolution” right at home, while saving you money… Its a win/win situation. Here’s how:

  • Set your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer to save on heating and cooling costs.
  • Buy an updated thermostat that is on a timer. You can set the timer to only turn on the A/C or Heat when you are actually home… there’s no point of paying for A/C or Heat when your at work!
  • Install compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs), these types of bulbs will soon replace the older less efficient bulbs, in fact the Canadian government is looking to mandate CFLs in the next few years.
  • Unplug appliances when you’re not using them. Often energy is still being used ( at a smaller %) when an appliance is turned “off’.
  • Install “low flow” water heads for your showers and sinks. They do a good job at keeping you water bills cost down, and work just as well as a normal faucet head.
  • Check your toilets. If  a toilet is constantly running water its not only wasting water, its also adding to your over all consumption on your bill…talk about foolishly spending your money! Opt to either replace the toilet with a low flow toilet that uses less water, or if cost is an immediate issue, go to your local hardware store to ask what is the best “fix” for a leaky toilet on a limited budget.
  • Buy ” energy star’ rated appliances. These have been designed to use less hydro, in turn saving you money.
  • Wash clothes in cold water more often. It does just as good of a job as hot; and costs much less!
  • If possible, take advantage of the hot whether of summer use a clothesline to save the energy .
  • Use homemade cleaning supplies. Your at the grocery store anyways buying them, why make a batch before you put them in the cupboard. Often Backing soda, lemon juice and vinegar - make excellent cleaning supplies, old fashion but they work! Also consider these natural  ingredients can be pet and people friendly. you can pay 99 cents for a bottle of vinegar or $5.99 for a bottle of the commercial grade chemical cleaner - you do the math!

These simple and cost effective ways will reduce your environmental damage around the house, if you make this a regular routine, it will become second nature to you and you will see the savings results.

As Canada progressively moves forward to be a world leader in the green revolution, make your mark and start today!
